“Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.”
This is such a rousing hymn, and none more so than when sung in St Albans Cathedral on Easter Monday, with dogs joining in, and the congregation waving their orders of service.
The Easter Monday Pilgrimage to St Albans Cathedral is an annual, family-friendly event, which has taken place for the past 79 years. It’s an all-age event, where around a thousand pilgrims gather to celebrate the joy of Easter. Typically, people walk to the cathedral and picnic on the grass before processing in at 2:30pm for the service at 3:00pm.
A small group from St Luke’s set off from the church at 9am for the 8/9 mile walk and met others en route. We made excellent progress, considering we had some very young first timers with us, and arrived in good time for our picnic.

The theme of the day was Joy, inspired by Psalm 16 and Matthew 28, and was explored through reflections from two local ordinands. Their reflections were about how the joy of the Resurrection shows up in our lives.
The 2025 service absolutely lived up to its title of ‘JOY’!
